What is "Residency for Tuition Purposes"?

Residency classifications for the purposes of UC Tuition are determined whether your tuition and fees will be assessed as a California resident or non-resident in accordance with the UC Residence Policy and Guidelines.

A Statement of Legal Residence (SLR) is required for all degree-seeking students at the University of California, Riverside. Official residence status is determined only after the student's SLR has been reviewed and any requested supporting documentation has been received by the residency fee coordinator.

For some undergraduate students, information provided during your application process was sufficient to make that determination.

Please note that you residency status for UC tuition is different from other residency or housing statuses, and no other process satisfies the requirement to submit an SLR.

Deadlines

Students are required to submit the Statement of Legal Residence upon acceptance into a new undergraduate or graduate degree program. Additionally, students who are readmitting following an extended absence must also submit the SLR.

Please follow the deadline below for submitting your SLR to ensure our ability to process your submission and ensure your tuition and fees are accurate prior to payment deadlines.

Submit your SLR no later than:
Fall July 15
Winter December 15
Spring March 15
Summer
(certain graduate programs only)
May 15

Compliance Requirement

  • Students who do not complete the SLR process by the deadline or who did not receive a California Resident classification from their application are subject to non-resident tuition.
  • Students who complete the SLR process and are classified as a non-resident will be charged non-resident tuition.
